Is Your Business Security Still Fit for Purpose? 5 Signs It's Time for a Review

Richard Morgan |

When was the last time you reviewed your business's fire and security systems?

For many organisations, systems are installed and maintained but rarely reassessed to ensure they're still meeting the needs of the business. As premises evolve, technology advances and working practices change, the current protection may no longer be enough.

Here are five signs it might be time to review your existing fire and security arrangements.

1. Your Business, Organisation or Premises Have Changed

Has your organisation expanded, taken on more employees or changed how your building is used?

Even relatively small changes can affect your existing fire and security arrangements.

For example:

  • New entrances or extensions may fall outside existing CCTV coverage.
  • Changes to building layouts could affect intruder alarm detection or fire alarm coverage.
  • Changes to working hours could mean existing alarm or access control schedules need adjusting.

Your systems should reflect how your premises are used today, not just how they were used when they were installed.

2. Your Security Technology Is Becoming Outdated

Fire and security technology continues to advance, offering improved reliability, image quality and system functionality.

While older equipment doesn't automatically need replacing, it may be worth reviewing your options if:

  • CCTV footage is unclear, particularly at night.
  • Your systems offer limited remote access or management.
  • Equipment is no longer supported by the manufacturer.
  • Your alarm signalling relies on older telephone technology.
  • Existing systems are difficult to expand or integrate.

The good news is that upgrading doesn't always mean replacing an entire system. Sometimes individual components can be improved while retaining equipment that remains suitable.

3. You're Experiencing Recurring Faults or False Alarms

Frequent faults, false alarms or unreliable equipment can be frustrating and disruptive.

Common warning signs include:

  • Repeated intruder alarm activations.
  • CCTV cameras losing connection or failing to record.
  • Access-controlled doors not operating correctly.
  • Recurring fire alarm faults.
  • Equipment requiring increasingly frequent repairs.

Routine servicing and preventative maintenance can help identify problems early.

However, if the same issues keep returning, it may be time to assess the overall condition and suitability of your systems rather than repeatedly addressing individual faults.

4. You're Unsure Whether Your Systems Meet Current Requirements

Fire safety responsibilities, relevant British Standards and insurance requirements can change over time.

It's worth asking:

  • Are your fire alarm and emergency lighting systems being regularly tested and maintained?
  • Does your fire risk assessment reflect the current use of your premises?
  • Do your intruder alarm and monitoring arrangements meet your insurer's requirements?
  • Are access permissions and security procedures regularly reviewed?
  • Have recommendations from previous inspections or maintenance visits been addressed?

A review of your existing arrangements can help identify potential gaps and highlight where further assessments or improvements may be necessary.

5. You Haven't Reviewed Your Systems in Several Years

Perhaps the biggest warning sign is simply not knowing when your fire and security systems were last reviewed as a whole.

Individual systems may be working correctly and receiving regular maintenance, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're still providing the most appropriate protection.

For example, your CCTV could be recording perfectly but no longer cover an important entrance. Or your access control system might be functioning correctly while still allowing access to former employees.

It's also worth considering whether your existing systems could be expanded, upgraded or integrated to provide better security and more efficient day-to-day operations.

Modern technology offers opportunities to bring different systems together, such as:

  • CCTV and intruder alarms: Integrating systems to improve detection, verification and response to security incidents.
  • Access control and automated gates: Managing vehicle and pedestrian access more effectively, with coordinated entry permissions.
  • Visitor management: Streamlining visitor and contractor sign-in, with the potential to integrate with existing Paxton access control systems.
  • Door entry and access control: Allowing staff to identify visitors and manage entry more conveniently and securely.

A periodic review helps you look at the bigger picture, identify potential weaknesses and explore how your existing systems could work better together.

And importantly, improving your security doesn't always mean replacing what you already have. Sometimes it's simply a case of expanding an existing system, integrating additional technology or making better use of its current capabilities.
